I was watching TV early Saturday morning. I think it was Big Ten Network, and the analyst who was talking predicted that Illinois had a chance to beat Michigan. He said that because of Michigan’s freshmen quarterbacks, Illinois might be able to limit them defensively. Just hearing him say that made me go to the game with a slightly more positive attitude. The first half felt like it has all season. But the second half felt like some of the best games I’ve been to, like Howard Griffith’s game against SIU and some of Kurt Kittner’s comebacks. I kind of had a feeling when Terry Hawthorne made that play that it might be big. Then when we had the goal line stand, and proceeded to take it 99+ yards and score, I felt like I was seeing something better than what we’d seen all year. It was absolutely awesome. There was a guy in a Forcier jersey sitting about 8 rows in front of us. He did a lot of yelling and cheering the first half. In the second half, he put a sweatshirt over the jersey and put the hood up. Lots of Illini fans from around me kept going down and giving him a hard time. So I didn’t talk smack to him, but lots of other people did.

I watched the first half and didn't see it coming.

Terry Hawthorne made a huge, huge play to save a TD and lead to a great goal-line stand. Right now, I'm thinking of all the Saturday's when better Illini teams lined up against UM in front of a home crowd and couldn't do what these beleaguered kids did this afternoon. The whole thing was sparked by a freshman from East St. Louis. No clue how this will all turn out, but the college football junkie in me dreams of a moment long in the future when this one play will be remembered as the moment when a program, maybe a season, turned the corner. At least for one more week, that's how I'll view it.

My first game in the stands at Memorial Stadium pretty much ended with Michigan stuffing us on four straight running plays when one pass from Tony Eason to Tim Brewster probably would have done the trick.

If anybody was there today, please report what it felt like. And even if it didn't happen, lie and tell me you talked smack to some squirrely Michigan fans outside of COs tonight.

M GO BLOW! OWW!
